The Simple Mindset Shift That Made Me LOVE Freelancing

Warning: there’s no going back…

Not enough clients, struggling for time, chasing payments, feeling overwhelmed, lonely or lost… sound familiar?

There’s plenty to juggle when you’re a freelancer. Stressful situations can drag on for weeks and it’s 100% your problem to fix.

It’s awful to feel stuck in your business when you put so much into it but it can happen within minutes if you don’t catch what you’re saying to people, or worse — yourself.

I read about a concept recently that snapped me out of a bad spell of “freelancer blues” and I haven’t gone back there since.

The article? It was a short and simple one about “locus of control”, which isn’t a new idea; it’s been around since the 1950s.

Simply put, your locus of control is a belief system: you either believe that internal or external factors are primarily responsible for your successes or failures. (“Locus” is just a fancy way of saying location.)

If you have an external locus of control…

You believe that external factors have more influence over your life than your own actions. You’re more likely to believe that fate, luck and other outside forces dictate the outcomes in your life.
